An Atom is the smallest unit of a substance consists of a nucleus of protons and neutrons with electrons orbiting. The identity of a substance will be destroyed if its atom is further divided, and different substances will have different types of atoms. Atoms can combine to form a molecule. The Atom that loses or gains electrons is called an ion.
