A Gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity factor, transmitted from generation to generation of plants and animals of particular characteristics such as colour, height or sex. Genes are pieces of DNA, and most genes contain the information for making a specific protein. Humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes, and every person has two copies of each gene, one inherited from each parent. Most genes are the same in all people, but less than, approximately 1 percent different between people.
