Hydrodesulphurization (HDS)

Hydrodesulphurization (HDS) is a catalytic chemical process typically used to remove sulfur compounds the Oil & Gas and Refining industries. A refining process for the HDS from atmospheric residue (ARDS), vacuum distillation residue (VRDS), naphthas, middle distillates, reformer feeds, etc. (MDS) in the presence of catalysts and substantial quantities of hydrogen. The HDS, in which the organic sulfur species are converted to H2S (R-SH + H2 -> R-H + H2S), and the H2S is easily removed from the desulfurized oil by absorption in a gas treatment unit and subsequently converted to elemental sulfur by the Claus process.
