Cetane Number (CN)

A Cetane Number (CN) of Cetane Rating is a standard measure of the ignition value of a diesel fuel that represents the percentage by volume of cetane in a combustible mixture. The higher Cetane Number, the easier it is to start a standard (direct-injection) diesel engine. A CN is a factor in determining the quality of diesel fuel including energy content, density, lubricity, cold-flow properties and sulphur content.
