Dogecoin (DOGE) is a cryptocurrency featuring a likeness of the Shiba Inu dog from the "Doge" that is considered an altcoin but a very different from other popular coins. Dogecoin was originally created at least in part of a payment system as a lighthearted joke for crypto enthusiasts, by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmerand in 2013. Despite this unusual origin story, it has exploded in popularity in 2021, has become the fifth largest cryptocurrency by market.
