Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse where the abuser manipulates situations repeatedly to trick the victim into distrusting person's memory that is psychological manipulation of a person usually over an extended period of time. The Gaslighting causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, uncertainty of one's emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator. The term derives from the title of the 1944 American film Gaslight, which was based on the 1938 British theatre play Gas Light by Patrick Hamilton.
