GPS (Global Positioning System)

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a global navigation satellite system that provides location, velocity and time synchronisation that is a technology using satellites and portable receivers to determine exact positions on the earth’s surface. The GPS is used to support a broad range of military, commercial, and consumer applications that was first used by the United States military in the 1960s, and owned by the United States government and operated by the United States Space Force.

Reference Definition by Gps.gov: The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S.-owned utility that provides users with positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services. This system consists of three segments: the space segment, the control segment, and the user segment. The U.S. Air Force develops, maintains, and operates the space and control segments.
