Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL)

Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) is the designation given by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for drinking water quality under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). A MCL is the greatest amount of a contaminant that is usually expressed as a concentration in milligrams or micrograms per litter of water.
