MX (Mutagen X, C5H3Cl3O3, 3-Chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone) is a member of the halogenated hydroxyfuranone class. It is a water disinfection by-product when drinking water is chlorinated produced by reaction of chlorine with natural humic acids.
