A Subsurface Safety Valve (SSSV) or Downhole Safety Valve is a component on an oil and gas well that is installed in the upper wellbore designed to close automatically in an emergency situation to prevent the uncontrolled release of reservoir fluids in the event of a worst-case-scenario surface disaster.
