Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) System

A Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) System is an energy storage technology that stores electricity from the grid within the magnetic field of superconducting coil which has been cryogenically cooled to a temperature below its superconducting critical temperature with near-zero loss of energy. It has been proposed as a storage option to support large-scale use of photovoltaics as a means to smooth out fluctuations in power generation.
