Sweetening

Sweetening is the removal of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from hydrocarbon oils and petroleum distillates such as gasoline and kerosene. The Sweetening process is applicable to the cracked products such as gasoline and kerosene from thermal or catalytic cracking processes. The sulphur compounds give an offensive odour and increase toxic sulphur dioxide engine emissions and cause corrosion problems in facilities. In a sweetening process, different types of ethanolamine can be used, including monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA), diglycolamine (DGA) and methyldiethanolamine (MDEA).
