The URL (Uniform Resource Locator or Universal Resource Locator) is a unique identifier used to locate a resource on the internet as a web address. A URL consists of the protocol used to access the resource; the location of the server (whether by IP address or domain name); the port number on the server (optional); the location of the resource in the directory structure of the server; a fragment identifier (optional). URLs occur most commonly to reference web pages (http or https), file transfer (ftp), email (mailto), database access (JDBC), and many other applications. A typical URL could have the form http://www.example.com/index.html, which indicates a protocol (http), a hostname (www.example.com), and a file name (index.html).
