Independent Protection Layer (IPL)

An Independent Protection Layer (IPL) is a device, system, or action that can prevent a scenario from proceeding to its undesired consequence and independent of the initiating event. An IPL is classified the Safeguard and must meet all the required criteria that can be modified in the administrative settings for a LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis). Protection layers can be divided into 2 main types: prevention and mitigation.
