A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a computer network system or device that spans a relatively large geographical area and shares the common communications line or wireless link to a server, typically, two or more local area networks (LANs). A WAN is often connected through public networks, such as the telecommunication through leased lines or satellites. The largest WAN in existence is the Internet System.
